Finding Inspiration

Ever wonder how the most unique fashion designers get their ideas? Ever been stuck in a rut and couldn’t find inspiration? Didn’t know where to look? Well, here it is… it isn’t where to look, it’s how to look.   It isn’t a place where inspiration is just sitting patiently, waiting for you to find it.   It’s a way of looking at everything around you as potential for inspiring a whole string of ideas. It’s easier than most people think, and the more open your mind is, the more natural it comes.   I’m sure you’ve seen things inspired by the most obscure of sources.   Maybe a pair of shoes inspired by Jodie Foster in Taxi Driver. Maybe a line of dresses inspired by the Beatles’ Sgt. Pepper era.    Or a line of purses inspired by your grandmothers wallpaper. I think you know what I mean.

Saul Williams

In his song, Black Stacey, Saul Williams writes, “I never had the courage to approach you at school. We joked around a lot, and I know you thought I dressed cool.” Well, he’s right, he does dress cool, and he takes the integration of fashion into his underground hip-hop image to a new level of cool. Ditch the overplayed, egotistical rap image that has been plaguing our youth with dumbed-down monotonous fashion-senselessness.

Bring on the layers of color, the scarves, the feathers, the war paint. Saul’s style is a working mix of indie-rock fashion, tribal glam, and urban flare. He brings it all together with a true artist’s sense of uniqueness that reflects his one-of-a-kind glitched-out hip hop poetry to a ‘T’. Don’t believe me?
